Paris's Charles de Gaulle International Airport is also locally known as Roissy Airport. Part of the airport lies in the commune of Roissy-en-France in Paris's northeastern suburbs, giving rise to the name. Built between 1966 and 1974, Charles de Gaulle Airport is the main hub of Air France and one of Europe's busiest airports, second only to London's Heathrow in terms of the number of passengers who pass through it every year. Paris is also served by the smaller, older Paris-Orly airport, but Orly does not see the same volume of travel that Charles de Gaulle does.
Located 16 miles northeast of Paris proper, Charles de Gaulle has four runways and three terminals, although the second is actually seven small terminals linked together by underground passageways and bus lines. The CDGVAL rail line connects all the terminal buildings, and also carries passengers to train and bus connections and parking lots. Terminal 1 is famous for its striking modernistic design by architect Paul Andreu, and has been extensively featured in movies and television, including the video for U2's song "Beautiful Day."
The airport is extensively linked to destinations around France, and is very easy to get to and away. Shuttle buses run regularly between Charles de Gaulle and the Place de l'Etoile in central Paris, as well as major bus and train stations. The airport is also connected to the suburban light rail system, and is the central hub of the TGV high-speed rail system, with trains departing in all directions to Brussels, Bordeaux, Marseilles, Strasbourg, and points between. It takes about 45 minutes to get from the airport to central Paris, 10 minutes to Euro Disney, and about an hour to Brussels.
